Welcome to Dungate Community Forest! Located southeast of Houston, BC, Dungate Community Forest is 14,212 hectares of predominantly spruce and pine forest. It was established in 2008. Our community forest’s mission is to sustainably manage the forest through local input and control, for the economic, social, and environmental benefit of the community and land base.
What is a community forest? A community forest is a forestry operation managed by a local government, First Nation, or community-held organization for the benefit of the entire community. At its core, community forestry is about local control over the benefits offered by local forests.
Dungate Community Forest is an area-based tenure managed in partnership with the District of Houston and a member of the BC Community Forest Association.
Do you know where Dungate Community Forest is?
It is located southeast of Houston. There are two main access points – south via Equity Mine Road and east via McKilligan Road to Aitken Road and past Knockholt Landfill.
Some popular recreational areas bordering or within the forest include China Knows (aka China Nose; or, Tse Zhul – Wet’suwet’en meaning ‘rock neck’), Aitken Falls, Old Man Lake Provincial Provincial Park, Equity Ice Falls, Houston Palisades and Dungate Meadows. There is lots to do in the forest in all four season. Snowmobiling is a popular activity in the winter and hiking and foraging top the list for summertime adventures.
